How to Block Porn on Android: 3 Free Methods That Work

The simplest free way to block porn on Android is Private DNS. Go to Settings, then Network & internet, then Private DNS, and enter a family filter hostname such as family.cloudflare-dns.com. That blocks adult domains across the whole phone on Wi-Fi and mobile data. Add Google SafeSearch set to Filter, and a family DNS filter on your home router, and you’ve covered most of the gaps without paying anything.

Android’s built-in parental controls, Google Family Link, are designed for supervising a child’s account. For your own phone, these three methods do the job.

Method 1: Private DNS (whole-phone filter) #

Private DNS routes your phone’s domain lookups through a filtering service that refuses to resolve adult sites. When a domain is blocked, Cloudflare explains that it returns the address 0.0.0.0 instead of the real one, so the site simply doesn’t load.

Cloudflare’s Android setup guide lists these steps for Android 9 and later:

1. Open Settings and go to Network & internet.
2. Tap Advanced, then Private DNS. (On some phones it’s directly under Network & internet.)
3. Choose Private DNS provider hostname.
4. Enter family.cloudflare-dns.com.
5. Tap Save.

Phone makers move this setting around. On Samsung phones it’s usually under Connections, then More connection settings. If you can’t find it, type “Private DNS” into the Settings search bar.

Which filter to use #

All three of these are free. Addresses and hostnames are from each provider’s own page (Cloudflare, CleanBrowsing).

For most adults, Cloudflare’s or CleanBrowsing’s Adult Filter is the right balance. The Family Filter is stricter because it also blocks VPNs and some big mixed-content sites, which closes common loopholes but may block things you use for other reasons.

Limits of Private DNS #

• You can switch it off in the same menu in a few seconds.
• A VPN or an app with its own DNS settings can bypass it.
• It filters domains, not images. Explicit content hosted on a mainstream site won’t be caught if the site itself isn’t blocked.

Method 2: Set Google SafeSearch to Filter #

SafeSearch hides explicit results in Google Search. According to Google’s help page, the Filter setting “blocks all explicit results,” while Blur only blurs explicit images.

1. In Chrome or the Google app, go to google.com/safesearch.
2. Make sure you’re signed in to the Google account you use on the phone.
3. Choose Filter.

Google notes that SafeSearch “only works on Google Search. It doesn’t affect content on other search engines or websites.” The CleanBrowsing filters above enforce SafeSearch at the DNS level, which makes the setting harder to switch off.

Method 3: Filter your home Wi-Fi #

Setting a family DNS on your router covers every device on your home network at once, including laptops, tablets and TVs. Enter these as your router’s DNS servers:

• Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for Families: 1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3
• CleanBrowsing Adult Filter: 185.228.168.10 and 185.228.169.11
• OpenDNS FamilyShield: 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123
